Week 4: “Sand” by Medeski, Martin & Wood

Some songs sound like the end of a really good weekend. They just make you want to take a deep breath, sink into a couch, stare at the ceiling, and be satisfied with life. That’s what this song sounds like to me. Medeski, Martin & Wood is an experimental jazz trio, and much of their prolific repertoire is pretty out there. Good, but out there. And then, every once in a while, they come along with something like this.

What makes this a beautiful song:

1. The bassline. Done on a double bass, it almost sounds as if the instrument is letting out a nice big stretch ‘n’ yawn.

2. The piano, lazily plunking out its notes.

3. The way the melody kind of gets lost towards the end, the song floats off, and the listener falls happily asleep.

Burying your fingers in warm sand.
