Week 251: “Sunshine” by Josh Rouse

March is one of the best months. It gets a bad reputation because of the unpredictable weather, but there’s a lot to like about this crazy month. Let me convince you:

It’s got an awesome name. March. Way more original than all those boring “-ember” months, way stronger than the indecisive “May”. March is the only month that’s also a verb. It sounds purposeful. It’s a name that says, “we’re heading for spring, whether you like it or not.” Which brings me to my next point…

It’s got spring. Nothing beats the freshness, the liveliness, the sheer meteorological optimism of spring. And even if spring isn’t your favourite season, March can still give you a boost because…

It’s got holidays. March Break for the kids. Purim if you’re Jewish. St. Patrick’s Day if you’re Irish or enjoy pretending to be Irish. March even manages to snag an Easter every few years. And best of all…

It’s got sunshine. My apologies to all of you living in the southern hemisphere, but up here, March means more hours of sunshine.

Regardless of where you live in the world, or what the weather happens to be doing during this crazy month, this great little tune by Josh Rouse is guaranteed to put a hint of spring into your step.

What makes this a beautiful song:

1. The opening percussion. Sounds like a parade of happy kids banging on pots and pans.

2. The “ah-ah-aaah” vocal part. It’s hard to sing it without shimmying your shoulders.

3. The lyrics. The idea of packing up the car and driving aimlessly is the kind of idea that spring adventures are made of.
